The answer is some yes and some no. Your given example of movig a tmobile phone to verizon will not work because tmobile is a GSM based carrier and Verizon uses CDMA and they are wholly incompatible. Its pretty much common sense but your phone will only ever work on the network type it was built for GSM is the most common worldwide but CDMA is slightly more common in the US. If you have a GSM based phone the story for moving your phone is pretty good but there are limitations. In general you can just switch out the sim cards in the phone and you are moved over to whatever GSM network that sim card is for. That said most american GSM carriers sim lock thier phones so that only sim cards form thier network will work in the phone. You can get the phone unlocked in multiple ways, the first one to try is just ask T - Mobile tell them you need to travel internationally. They will usually unlock a phone after the contract is fullfilled and your account is in good standing. If your carrier will not unlock your phone do not lose hope, there are numerous services available online to unlock phones for you. If you have a CDMA phone Verizon or Sprint for instance things are more dire. While technically a phone from one of those companies would work on the network of another of those companies, the reality is that the ESN of the phone needs to be listed in the pool of the network you are on and the companies will not release the numbers to be added to another network so the phones are actually not protable between companies.
