try to buy a laptop that meets all your need i. e. if you are using it for gaming, get a machine with a good video card, etc, as on. Since you are buying a brand new machine, see whether it's Microsoft Vista capable. Coz, they might sell laptops for cheap prices, that they know soon it will go out of business which are not Microsoft Vista capable, after Microsoft release Microsoft Vista. So my opinion is if you are buying a new machine, if you could affored a machine that is Microsoft Visata capable and meets your need of the machine, spend a little, it's worth. Coz in case you needed to check out vista, some later time, you have it with you

That is really hard question to answer without knowing what you want it to do. I have a dell, hp and a toshiba. I am a heavy equipment mechanic and use my toshiba at work. Its a basic machine with CD burner will play DVD's 80 gig HD and is almost indestructable. I like the HP because of the clear video, DVD burner, built in wireless ect. but I would not think of bringing it to work. The dell is nice but I like the other laptops better. Value wise I would say that the Toshiba has been the best for an average tough computer. by the way HP and COMPAQ are the same Machine
i'd say dell. if you are afraid it'd spoil through normal use just get insurance. most expandability n flexibility at a good price. find the system that fits u, not some preconfigured thingy. ibm stuff is highly overpriced n their blue access ibm doesnt work most of the time. i should know, i m using one now XD i pressed it but the programme required was not properly installed. even tho it came from ibm shop - . -
I advise you to buy a VAIO. I love mine. I will never change brands again
